Security is rapidly deteriorating in Nigeria. There is the Boko Haram insurrection in the northeast, unrest in the southern oil patch, and conflict over water and land in the middle of the country with rising herdsmen on a rampage and the new gunmen and bandits.
Many of these challenges are long-standing. Adding to the list of security crises is a nationwide crime wave involving kidnapping for ransom, cattle rustling, and home invasions.
Such crimes have long existed in one part of the country or another, but what is new is their intensity and reach; even the poor are now victims of kidnapping, marauding Fulani herdsmen, for example, Security in Nigeria is the responsibility of the army and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
But in a situation were Army and police are been killed on a daily basis, who will secure you, that has been the challenges facing Nigerians for the past 10years but the present situation in Nigeria with marauding Fulani herdsmen now which the federal government is turning blind eyes over, doing nothing about it, is the situation of saving yourself, stop waiting for Nigeria Government to protect or guild you, guild yourself.
This has given birth to Small community policing initiatives, people are rising up to protect themselves since the government can not protect them one would say is not a bad idea, but for the federal government of Nigeria is actually a bad idea for some reason to take such step.
One would applaud them, the regions, but Nigeria government is seeing such initiatives as illegal, saying no to regional policing, vigilante groups are often tacitly sanctioned by government authorities but at the same time saying yes to a particular regional security.
In 2003 Northeast launched the Hisbah Corps whose duty is for security, peace, order and to enforce sharia law. the corp has been operating legally in Nigeria for the past 17years, Hisbah officers who observe violations of Sharia are to enforce and correct anything that is against Islam and protect the Islam community.Daurawa the leader as of today.
Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria sometimes called MACBAN is a loose partisan advocacy group centred on promoting the welfare of Fulani pastoralists in Nigeria. The organization was founded in the early 1970s with headquarters in Kaduna that are present among the law brokers in Nigeria, to protect Fulani internet and to protect them.
In Yorubaland 29 January 2020, state governors have to take the concept of local security a step further, establishing what amounts to a regional police force, it is meant to the guild and protects its region, supports the work of national police, but not replace, the national police. Amotekun, known officially as the Western Nigeria Security Network, is funded by Yoruba people, Sunday Igboho as the leader.
The Eastern Security Network was launched on December 11, 2020, to protect the Southeast/south-south from marauding Fulani herdsmen and other criminal elements. Nigerian government saw the ESN as a threat to its authority and deployed the army with fighting jets, guns and ammunition to locate and destroy ESN bases. This escalated with the outbreak of the Orlu Crisis a month later.Nnamdi Kanu as the Leader.
This three initiatives have one thing in common, to guild and to protect, only Hisban that has extra work, to enforce the law even with the judiciary system of Government in place.
People like Daurwa, Sunday Igbho and Nnamdi who have volunteered themselves with a mission to help their communities fight crime; onslaughts of insurgency; banditry, Bokoharam and marauding Fulani herdsmen should be encouraged and given every support rather river is the case in Nigeria, it is not wrong for people like that to rise in defence of their people, as is done in the northern part of the country, it can also never be wrong for the likes of Igboho and Nnamdi Kanu to do so in the South West and south-east if their counterpart in the north with Daurawa as hisbah leader have been protecting their county for over 17years since is now obvious that the Federal Government can not protect their community.
These crime activist are not out to fight responsible Fulani herders, Northerners or anybody else, but the marauding God forsaken criminals, making life unbearable for people on their journeys; in their farms; villages and towns. for individuals to volunteer to help, fight crimes in their own places, community and town is not a crime rather they should be celebrated.
The big question is, why would the federal Government allow some feet for some region and kick against the same feet in another region.
