NEF noted that the recent escalation of attacks by bandits, rustlers and insurgents had left the only conclusion that the people of the North were now completely at the mercy of armed gangs who roam towns and villages at will, wreaking havoc and killing people without being questioned.
The statement explained that it was no exaggeration to say that the people of the North had never experienced this level of exposure to criminals who attack, kill, maim, rape, kidnap, burn villages, human and rustle cattle, while President Buhari issues threats and promises that have no effect.
The convener, Northern Elders Forum, Professor Ango Abdullahi, observed, “It would appear that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and governors have lost control over the imperatives of protecting people of the North and their property, a constitutional duty that they swore to uphold.

The group said this in a statement on Monday by its National Coordinator, Zana Goni and National Women Leader, Hajiya Mario Bichi.

The statement reads, “The latest attack on Government Science Secondary School, Kankara in Katsina State, where over 333 children are reportedly missing has further confirmed our position that our region is now at the mercy of terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements.
“As a result of this, we strongly believe that time has come for our President to bring in fresh hope and clear directions on how best the country will strategise to overcome the present insecurity situation in the country in general.
They call on other well-meaning Northerns to stand and to stop playing politics with their people’s lives.
