Inspector, two others killed in a gun duel with bandits

A Police Inspector Omolayo Olajide and two bandits were killed during a gun duel among operatives of the Ogun State Police Command and a group of bandits in Saala Orile Forest along the agrarian Yewa North Local Government Area of the state.


The Police Inspector and bandits were said to have been killed on Tuesday during an exchange of fire.

It was learnt that the bandits, who invaded the forest and were attacking some Fulani herdsmen grazing in the area and upon distress calls received for intervention, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Ayetoro, Bernard Ediogboyan, led his men and operatives of Joint Security Intervention Squad (JSIS) to the scene.

On sighting the team, the bandits opened fire on them and the policemen fought back.

The police spokesperson in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who disclosed this to reporters, said the encounter lasted for about 20 minutes with two of the bandits shot dead while others escaped with gun shot

He said an Inspector of Police identified as Omolayo Olajide lost his life during the gun duel.

According to him, three locally made guns, 16 live cartridges, assorted criminal charms, one cutlass, one small phone and an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle were recovered from the bandits.

However, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, who expressed sadness over the death of the police officer while fighting bandits, had directed that the escaped members of the gang must be hunted down and brought to justice.

Bankole condoled with the family of the late inspector and assured them that his death will not be in vain.
