Eti-Osa Bar Forum, (NBA) held a Press Conference on Friday, 19th February 2021 in Lagos.
With an application of the Eti-Osa Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association pending before the National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association.
The press conference critically examined the killings of ethnic-religious character that is ravaging states across the country, kidnappings of note, the Government Secondary School, Kagara and the kleptomaniac dictatorship that is being foisted upon Nigerians.
The basis for the necessity of the National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association holding between 24th and 26th, February 2021, Is to take urgent resolutions on these developments on the State of the Nation as well as grant our application for the NBA Eti-Osa Branch.
The role of the Nigerian Bar Association as the watchdog of rule of law in Nigeria’s democracy cannot be understated.
Therefore, NBA’s NEC should also consider and grant the application for the Eti-Osa Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association in fulfilment of the provisions of the Constitution of the Nigerian Bar Association (2015 as amended) as the condition of existence of a Judicial Division has been met.
Two members of the Association were killed, by yet-to-be-identified gunmen, which is bringing home the challenges of killings that is ravaging the country and the need for the Nigerian Bar Association to intervene.
With the recent incident of the kidnap of secondary school students at Government Secondary School, Kagara should also not escape the attention of the NBA NEC,
We call on both the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Niger State Government to join forces to secure the release of the students immediately.
In all, the descent to dictatorship as evidenced on the 13th day of February 2021 at the Lekki Toll Gate, where #OccupyLekkiTollGate Protesters have repressed throw up challenges for the NEC Meeting of the NBA to take up.
The dictatorship is now coupled with growing kleptomania with the announced ambitions to dip into pension funds as well as engage in the sale of refineries and assets such as the International Conference Centre among others.
We call on the NBA NEC to resolve to ONE DAY WARNING NATIONWIDE COURT BOYCOTT as a means of putting pressure on the Federal Government of Nigeria to take action on insecurity, the striking example of the Birnin Kebbi Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association that undertook a Court Boycott to protest the unlawful activities of an armed Ethnic Militia in Kebbi State. As banditry and ethnic killings ravage the country, such an action is necessary now in Nigeria.
However, the killings on an ethnic basis only deepen the crisis of underdevelopment in the country.
In all, as a way forward, we call on all the civic organisations including the Nigerian Bar Association to rise up and mobilise Nigerian citizenry to save democracy from imminent collapse.
